This regime was submitted by a person I'll call L. L's regime could be classified under:

.. A "Poor Person's Insulin Pump" regime.

(Insulin types: Humalog and Ultralente)

And please remember:

ITA can EMPOWER YOU too!

 So here we go...

".. This is a visual presentation of what clinical information says SHOULD HAPPEN to this person ONLY!

Do NOT make any changes to your regime without your doctors approval!!!

Below is L's real life IDDM regime as she submitted it to me:
 Regime  Client's own description

INSULIN

7:30 AM 20 units U
7:30 AM 6+ units H
12:00 PM 4+ units H
6:00 PM 6+ units H
6:00 PM 18 units U

FOOD (carbs)

7:30 AM breakfast 45 grams
12:30 PM Lunch 45 grams
6:00 PM dinner 45 grams
10:00 PM snack 20 grams

"I have trouble with being low early in the morning. Around 5 or 5:30 am. I have great bG reading at lunch and most at breakfast. I seem to go higher around dinner. My bedtime readings are fairly normal.

I have seen readings as low as 35 and as high as 400's."

To help understand L's regime, I use a credentialed medical simulation called:

Insulin Therapy AnalysisTM (ITA)

First, here is how I "look" at a person's IDDM regime:

First, I fire up Windows 3.1 on my computer (or Windows95).
Second, I simply run the ITA computer program.
Third, I type in the person's food (carbs) and insulin (units) and time and set some sensitivities.
Fourth, I just click on the button that says: View Graphs! or View HiLo

... the ITA computer program is able to "show me" what her insulin and food regime "looks like"...

Let me show you:

Here is what her Insulin "looks like":

It sure helps me to see what her insulin schedule "looks like". ITA clearly shows me WHEN her insulin should be pressuring her bloodsugars down the most. I added the black text and the blue shading to help you "see" the significance of the graph better. (I can also "see" HOW LONG and HOW FAST her insulins SHOULD last!)

... and here is what her Food "looks like":

It sure helps me to see what food "looks like". ITA shows me WHEN her food should be pressuring her bloodsugars up the most. I added the black text and the red shading to help you "see" the significance of the graph better. (I can also "see" HOW LONG and HOW FAST her food SHOULD last!)

Here they are again:

(Yes, these are those same graphs, this time just "lined up" on top of each other.)
food is pressuring her blood sugar levels up..
ABOVE: What food "looks like" is really called carb loading.
BELOW: What Insulin "looks like" is really called available (bolus) insulin.
... and Available Insulin (bolus) is pressuring her bG levels DOWN...

Ok? ... so now the ITA computer program simply compares the above (blue) Available Insulin to the above (red) Carb Loading. Think of it as a "Battle of the Bulges"; that the insulin bulges are battling the carb bulges...

ITA shows me what the outcome of that FOOD vs. INSULIN battle should "look like".

Once again, here is what the ITA computer program does:

1) ITA keeps track of how much food SHOULD be present based on the user's personal food schedule....

2) At the same time, ITA keeps track of how much insulin SHOULD be present based on the user's personal insulin schedule.

3) Then ITA just compares the food and insulin.

Here are all three graphs together now, exactly the way ITA presents it:

Re-stated for clarity: ....

The bottom two ITA graphs are meant to give you a feel for how much "oooommmphff" accompanies her meals and her insulin shots .... And the top graph is her predicted blood sugar readings! It's what her bloodsugars should "look like"!

You can also think of it this way: ....

The bottom two graphs are a visual representation of both the timing and amounts involved in the insulin coverages and carb loading of L's regime! ..... And the top graph is her predicted blood sugar readings based on those facts!

Re-stated a little differently: ....

The bottom two graphs are the "HOW MUCH", "WHEN", and "HOW LONG" for the individual's meals and insulin shots. The top graph is the "HOW MUCH", "WHEN", and "HOW LONG" her bloodsugars should be effected.

(Note: The ITA program uses the medical industry's own clinical data regarding insulin absorption and carb loading to determine the "HOW MUCH", "WHEN", and "HOW LONG".

ITA therefore just makes visual what the medical industry's own clinical information says SHOULD happen. ... tailored to the user's individual regime!)

And that's how EASY ITA is!

Wow!

ITA easily communicated really important information about L's regime: like when she is most likely to be vulnerable to both lows and highs!

May I point out:

ITA is Computer Aided Design of (IDDM) Diabetes.

Notice how ITA has engaged you in L's regime!

Yes, ITA allows a "what-if" analysis.

Similar to how an airplane pilot can train and learn on an Airplane simulator, you can train and learn with ITA, a Diabetes simulation .... on your own WindowsTM computer ... in your own home!

Finally, you can have a tool that can describe the "geometry" of your individual Diabetes; that can Communicate YOUR individual Diabetes to your family, friends, and physician; that allows you to CRAFT a Diabetes Regime!

ITA enables intelligent analysis of your IDDM regime.

You can learn how to reduce the volatility;

You can show IDDM children and adults what to strive for.

Invaluable for all those who want to take responsibility for their own diabetes.

An essential Diabetes Communication Tool!

Did I remember to mention that .....
ITA is endorsed by a member of the Board of Directors of the AADE?
 Insulin Therapy AnalysisTM
puts
Managed Health Care in the Home where it belongs!
